Christmas Countdown Activities

I'm committing this year to follow through with our Jesse Tree.  I thought it would be a great addition to have a fun way to countdown the days until Christmas too.   I've seen a couple of versions of the idea around the web and am tweaking it for our family and my personality.

  1. TJs chocolate advent calendar
  2. build a sandman (we live at the beach)
  3. string a popcorn and cranberry garland
  4. make snowflakes to decorate the front door
  5. decorate a gingerbread house
  6. make fudge
  7. make cookies
  8. make holiday brownies
  9. make Christmas Tea
  10. take goodies to neighbors
  11. have a tea party with the girlies
  12. call Mimi
  13. call Grandma Kenlyn and Grandpa Bob
  14. make meal bags for the homeless to keep in the car
  15. decorate gingerbread men with a buddy
  16. watch "Hoops and YoYo ruin Christmas"
  17. watch "Nestor the Donkey"
  18. make Printable Nativity
  19. read a Christmas book
  20. read a Christmas book
  21. wear a star on your face all day
  22. say "la la la" everytime someone says "fa" all day
  23. hot chocolate under the stars
  24. Christmas lights decoration ride
Now... how to present it?

An orange spot in a busy week

One day, a week or so ago, I was tired and just a bit overwhelmed.

and then... an outstanding orange offering... just for me... just to bless me.

It worked. Thanks friend.

p.s. I found a new fruit, the horned melon. Surprisingly green in the middle, it's like a cucumber and a kiwi went to the movies with a slimy squid. Interesting. I'd eat one again, but I'm not sure I'd buy one.

All the cool kids...

do their school work at Starbucks.

When school gets hard, a change of scenery (and a cup of coffee for Mom) always seems to help.

My fortune

Could a weekend away with kids count? I think not.

I'm feeling a case of island fever coming on. Maui is calling me.

But then... I have a friend, who says that you should always add, "in Christ Jesus" to the end of your fortune.

Maybe that means I need a Sabbath Retreat... just me and my Bible.

Why not both!

Polar Bears

If it's New Years, it's time for our town's Polar Bear dip.
It draws quite a crowd.
Our family took the plunge... well... most of our family...
SOMEONE had to take the pictures.
I volunteered.

DSC_0008

Here's a "Where's Waldo" for you... can you find Surferman, Grom and Gogo?

There were so many people that I lost the guys a few times.
I was so worried that I wouldn't get a good picture.

DSC_0015

It started raining hard right before they were supposed to go into the ocean.
The crowd didn't wait. They rushed on in.

DSC_0024

Here's Gogo before.

DSC_0031

And here they all are after.
Cold and proud.

DSC_0043

Everyone gets a certificate.
Proof they've done it!

It was a fun way to welcome 2011.

Happy Birthday Kenlyn!

Today is Surferman's Mom's birthday.

We took this picture for her email greeting.

I love the way Grom is looking at Surferman in this shot.

FREE!

This is my dad and his chair.
He had it custom made.
I remember going with my Dad to pick it up from the shop when I was little.
It was the most comfortable chair in our home.
I got him to pose when he and Surferman dragged it to the curb.
Someone got a great chair upholstered with many memories.

We kept Dad.

Bedtime

Stories have been read. Teeth are brushed and flossed. Prayers are finished. He's tucked in and I make my way out of his bedroom.

And just before I shut the door, he always manages to say, "Mom?"

He has something profound to say or important to ask. At least he thinks so...

An easy way to make someone's day

Found on my windshield outside Trader Joe's... a love note from a dear friend.

Grom decided the note was for me and the candy for him.

Numi Dry Desert Lime

a new favorite thing...

If you like lime and Thai food... I predict you'll enjoy this tea. It's delicious and warms my tummy. It's spendy compared to grocery store teas, but what else can I spend my allowance on?

I'm looking for great decaf teas. Do you have a recommendation?

He says it's a broken ferris wheel...

I think it's a pear.

We love Lite-Brite.

This one was actually mine when I was a kid. It's definitely vintage if not an antique.

I couldn't plug it in until my design was done and it seemed like we never had black construction paper to block the light. Grom's childhood will be way better than mine. I have a huge stack of black paper.

Happy Face Breakfasts

Grom loves a happy face for breakfast. I wish he always had a happy face for breakfast. I think he might be hypoglycemic when he wakes up. When my sister was little, my mom woke her up with a glass of orange juice. No one was allowed to talk to her until she had finished it. I may try something similar with Grom.

Here are a couple of our latest creations...

Blueberry Swirl bread eye brows, strawberry mouth, (yep that's a) marshmallow nose, cheese cheeks and eye whites with blueberry pupils.

This one was messier. Blueberry yogurt face, granola hair, tortilla circle mouth and cheeks and nose, raisin eye balls, and chocolate covered sunflower seed freckles. I'm not sure what the candied ginger on the mouth is supposed to be. I think they are there just because Grom loves to eat it. It has to be a special treat... otherwise he's eat the bag in a single sitting.

Be happy!

Fabulous Fun Friday

I always look forward to Fridays.

It's the end of my week. It's the start of a weekend. And... it's Fabulous Fun Friday.

Grom and I spend the day with his "friend buddy" Elias and my "friend buddy" Stacey (Elias' mom). We've been doing this quite a while. It's about time I blogged about it.

Grom and I swing by their house and pick them up. I put the "Grom" playlist on my iPod and we're off. The boys yap in the back seat. The moms yap in the front seat.

We start with some grocery shopping. Always Trader Joe's, sometimes Von's or Foods For Less. We have even ventured all the way to the "Train Wreck Store" in Santa Maria.
Our local TJ's is great. They have the nicest women working there (especially on Friday mornings). They know our names and are always so good to the boys - special "snacks" just for the boys when they are sampling items for the adult pallet.

They also have a very lazy employee, Sally the Seal. She always finds somewhere to hide so she can slack off. When kids find her, they get a treasure from the barrel.
She hides really well. Sometimes we have to walk through the store twice. Sometimes the boys ask for hints. She turns up in the funniest places... with the bananas, by the ice cream, on top of signs... she gets around.
Here she's lounging amongst the TP. If it's not a prize from the barrel, it might be a balloon or stickers.
At least they aren't stuck all over the inside of my car windows. (I can't figure out why in the world parents let their kids do that.) Start paying attention, check out those minivans and SUVs... stickers! Crazy! Anyway back on topic...
Insulated totes are key to FFF and not having to run right home to put those groceries away. Check out those "green" bags. I have quite a collection. Most are from the last time we worried about the planet. I think we were trying to save trees then and do away with the paper bag. Ha! Now plastic bags are evil. Wow another rabbit trail... back on topic...
After the groceries are loaded, we head to Starbucks. Here's a shot of the boys sitting like proper gentlemen. Yep... that's Grom sitting on his head.
Stacey and I get a drink and we're off to gymnastics. My newest favorite is a Decaf Pike's Place Misto.
Gymnastics has been great for both of the boys. Grom has learned to listen and follow directions. Elias has learned to be more adventurous. It's a fantastic facility. From the Observation Deck, Stacey and I solve the world's problems while the boys run through their stations.
Here's Grom with strong arms on the parallel bar. You should see him flip. Here's Elias jumping so fast on the trampoline that he's blurry.
Here's Grom hamming for his mommy in the ball pit.
Here's Elias zooming down the slide.

After gymnastics, we usually get lunch from Panda Express. It's cheap and the boys like it and well... the moms like it too. We use coupons from the survey on the back of each receipt and get an even better deal.
We head to a park. After eating the boys play. Stacey and I work on the any world problems that we've left unsolved.

Getting my grocery shopping done is fun.
Watching the boys flip and balance and jump and laugh is fun.
Going out to lunch is fun.
Playing at the park is fun.

But the best part and what I really look forward to is spending time with my friend, Stacey. She is a blessing from God. We have a lot in common and there are a lot of ways that we are really different. It's an "iron sharpening iron" relationship. I learn from her and she learns from me.

She makes Fridays fabulous.

Maybe he'll be a photographer...

or not.

Grom got a hold of my camera the other day.

And so without further ado... his momma proudly produces his first photographic installation. Prints are available for a donation to his college fund. Signed prints might be harder... he's fussy about writing his name. He can't do it perfectly yet, so he'd rather not. I think the perspective from 42" is interesting.

Surferman

This one is my favorite. Those are the flowers he bought me for my birthday. My birthday tea is also in the background. I like the pattern the chandelier casts on the ceiling.

Don't tell Grom, but he's getting his own camera for Christmas. It's my old one, but he'll love it anyway. All the best photographers started out with a hand-me-down camera.

The best birthday gift ever

I thought I really wanted an iPhone.

But today Grom gave me the best birthday present ever... unlimited hugs and kisses.

When he first saw me this morning, he gave me the biggest head popping off squeeze that I've had in a long time. He followed it with a sloppy kiss. And then told me that I could have birthday hugs and kisses all day long. From a boy that routinely "runs out" of hugs long before his mommy is done being hugged, it was a great gift.

All I had to do was call his name and he'd come running to give me another tight squeeze.

And they were transferable. His grandpa and grandma and Daddy were all able to share in my birthday gift.

It was better than cake.

Happy, Happy Birthday to me

Aloha! Maui 2008 Wrap Up

Tropical Flower, originally uploaded by Sam and Ian.

2 years ago Surferman and I celebrated our 10th anniversary with a trip to Maui. I blogged about the 10 best things then. We visited the most wonderful of Hawaiian islands (yep, that's our opinion and we're sticking with it) at the end of August. I'm just getting around to blogging about our adventures. We checked up on some of our old favorites and discovered some new favorites too.

We stayed at the Maui Guest House again. It was just as wonderful as last time and still highly recommended. So comfortable and well equipped...

We found some great meals...
  • Aloha Mixed Plate was as good as we remembered it. We stopped there our first day. It was a great way to acclimate.
  • The Fish Market Maui - Fantastic, simple pork and mahi mahi tacos. We caught a taco special on a weekend night. Fantastic deal.
  • Grandma's Coffee House - a nice place to get a latte and a really big cookie. Isn't it cute? Can you see the stained glass of Grandma in the window?
  • Okazuya & Deli Honokowai - Big portions, low prices. You can sit at tables on the sidewalk of the strip mall, or do as we did and take it to Canoe Beach. We enjoyed our dinner as the outrigger canoe teams were coming in from their workouts and the sun set.
  • CJ's Deli & Diner - a fantastic cheeseburger without the crowd at Cheeseburger in Paradise.
  • The Gazebo - can't skip a trip here. Two words... Macadamia Nut Pancakes... okay that's three words. There's always a line. Bring a book.
As far as snacking...
The sweet potato and taro chips from Hawaiian Chip Company are the bomb. We bought a bag at Costco on our arrival and enjoyed them so much that we stopped for bags for co-workers, family and friends. A much better "I've been to Maui and you haven't" gift than those grody chocolate(?) covered macadamia nuts that aren't even made in Hawaii.
Things to do, things to see...

  • One morning we did the silly tourist thing and drove to see the Haleakala Crater at Sunrise. It was a crazy thing to do. It's cold up there. It's one of those once in a lifetime experiences that I'm glad I can say we did. We stopped for breakfast at the Kula Lodge Restaurant. The coffee was hot and wonderful.
  • With all our CSA boxes and interest in chickens and such, a stop at Surfing Goat Dairy was a no- brainer. It's a fun little goat dairy. You can pay extra for a tour, but poking around on our own was enough fun. It was a little hard to find, but worth it. We bought a goat cheese sampler. It was delicious.
  • Royal Hawaiian Surfboard Rentals - Prison Street, Lahaina. Unfortunately they don't have a website, but in Surferman's opinion they have the best rental longboards on Maui. If it would've fit in his suitcase...

Where to kick back and relax...
  • Barnes and Noble - Lahaina - This might seem silly, but we love bookstores. Love to sit and drink a cup of coffee and browse books. It's a nice way to spend an evening.
  • Puamana Beach Park - at the south end of Lahaina. This was a great little beach for me to sit in the shade with a friendly surf break for Surferman. I got lots of video. Hopefully someday we'll figure out how to get it into the computer. He had so much fun.
What we'd do different...
  • Rent a bigger car. We really cheaped out. On day two of our trip, we made a pact to stop complaining about the econob0x Thrifty Rent-A-Car was passing off as their Manager's Special. Nothing special about this car - power nothing. It was transportation. And the reason we'll have to tell you about the road to Hana after our next trip. Never rent a car that is shorter than your longboard.
Edited to add... It's been a couple of months since our trip. With recent changes, it was really nice to go back and remember our getaway, to count our blessings and get a little feeling of aloha.
