Done #11 - Visit Surferman's parents in Washington State

Back in May we visited Surferman's Mom and Step-Bob in Washington state.  We arrived in Anacortes just in time for their annual Waterfront Festival.  We were expecting "Washington weather" - cool, foggy, maybe some rain, instead we were blessed with their warmest day of the year.
There was a lot of fun things to do and see at the festival.

Tons of activities for kids.  Grom was finally old enough to get to do a lot of things.  Grom and his Grandpa built a wood boat.  He got to talk to firemen, policemen, fishermen, and more.

One of the highlights was doing the bungee jump.  When I first saw it I thought it looked really fun but never imagined that Grom would be brave enough to give it a try.

I  guess all that time in that bounce house at Farmer's Market and his gymnastics class has made him brave. He loved it. He flew at least 30 feet into the air - laughing and smiling the whole time.

I love this picture of his just his feet.  It makes me smile and remember his loud laugh.

I can now say I've been yachting.  Too bad it's not on my list to 101 Things to Do.

The local yacht club was giving free cruises.  It was a great ride - there are so many beautiful homes waterfront.  I learned a lot about yachting.  Think RV on the water...

We drove home from Anacortes to Portland, OR to Grants Pass, OR to Fortuna, CA (to visit Uncle Danny) and finally home.

It was  a great vacation.

Done #40 - Read 10 Fiction Novels

Austenland by Shannon Hale
A fun, quick read.  Can't wait for the movie.  Anne Hathaway would be good for the lead.

The Atonement Child by Francine Rivers
The Healing Quilt by Lauraine Snelling

Back to Holly Springs by Jan Karon
I was excited to hear about a new Father Tim book.  Father Tim travels home to Mississippi and his past.  I missed the gang in Mitford, but look forward to getting to know the folks of Holly Springs.

State of Fear by Michael Crichton
Wow!  This book was published in 2004 and a bit prophetic for 2007.  It's about thwarting ecoterrorists and their promotion of the idea of global warming or abrupt climate change with questionable science.  It was eye opening and revealing.  I appreciate the research Michael Crichton did for this book and his thoughts and notes in the back of the book are as good as the book.

Done - #90 Plan and execute the best 4WD Club Christmas Party ever!

Tonight was our annual 4WD Club Christmas Party.

Surferman is a jeeper.  He and my dad co-own a green jeep.  I don't know much about it.  It's ugly and it always needs to have something done to it or something fixed.

They belong to a local club of people who like to take their cars off road.  I don't really get it, but it's something that Surferman likes to do and I try want to be supportive.

I volunteered last year to be the Social Chair for the club.  I only had to plan and execute the Christmas Party.  We held the party at the place where we have our meetings.  The restaurant did an excellent job with the food.  All I had to do was decorate and take care of desserts.  I bought the desserts and kept the decorations simple.

I did such a good job, I get to do it again next year.

Notes to self...
no scented candles on the table - who knew so many people have a problem with fragrance?
bring trash bags
chocolate desserts were most popular

Organized Spices

It's hard to believe that GeMoOrgNo is done.  I still have a couple of posts of organized things.  They'll show up sometime.

These shots are of my spice and herb collection.  I bought the wooden racks and some of the jars (white lids) at Cost Plus.  I don't remember how much they cost, but they couldn't have been too expensive, because I'm rather frugal.  I made labels with the label maker and also use a black or silver sharpie.  Silver sharpies are the greatest.  The star sticker tells me that I have a giganto Costco bottle out in the utility room to refill the smaller bottle when it's empty.

I separate the "sweet" spices and keep them together in one area.  The rest are arranged more or less in alphabetical order.  I'm not compulsive about it - a zone kinda arrangement.

A big thanks to Lara the Lazy Organizer for motivating me to post every day this month.  It's been fun.  I've also made a few new organizing friends... Multi-tasking  Mommy, Corrie at Tyler's Triumph and Andrea who is Just About Perfect

It's been fun.  And #31 is done.

Like It or Not... Here comes Monday

I know that these posts I make on Sundays make such a difference in how my week goes.

I have managed to get the cold that first Grom and then Surferman have been dealing with. I hope I have it worse, because I haven't been very sympathetic with either of them. I feel b a d.

A new week is here and I have to get it together.

I did better this week with my habits. I was consistent with earrings and going to bed earlier (thanks to Surferman). I'm going to focus on drinking water this week. Fluids should help my cold too.

Habit 7 - Wear earrings daily - HABIT!
Habit 3 - Lights out by 10 pm nightly. - Surferman has been a great encouragement.

Habit 2 - Drink 3 qts of water daily.

Monday
Leftover Pork Ribs - Some Yummy Carb - Veggies - Salad

Tuesday
Enchilladas (from the freezer - didn't eat last week) - Rice - Beans - Salad

Wednesday
Meatloaf Sandwiches - Tomato Soup

Thursday
Chicken and Stuffing Casserole - Salad

Friday
Spaghetti Squash with Meat Sauce - Garlic Bread - Salad

Saturday
Dinner out before church

Sunday
Family Dinner - Menu TBD

My life has been Lovelier. I completed some of my tasks and have some new ones to add.

I'm back with the same tasks this week.
1. Clean out and organize the drawers on Grom's bed.
4. Spiff up guest bathroom.
7. Have a tea party with Grom and Gigi.
8. Pack Surferman's lunch 3 times this week - add love notes.
9. Organize Gigi's bathroom drawers.
10. Wear perfume daily.
11. Restart and be consistent with Daily Bible Reading plan.

101 Things - Still working on Psalm 8

Have a great week!

The only way to start a week...

I know it's not Saturday, but I like the idea of Lara's Smart Habit Saturday, I just have an awful time of getting a post done on Saturday. I'm going to add it to my Sunday night post that helps me organize my week.

I feel like a habit creating failure. I've managed to set ONE habit and it's pretty silly in the grandness of life.

Habit 7 - Wear earrings daily - HABIT!

I am not abandoning my desired habits, I'm just regrouping and starting over. Here's what I'm working on this week...

Habit 3 - Lights out by 10 pm nightly.

Habit 2 - Drink 3 qts of water daily.

Here's what we're eating this week...

Monday
Leftover Chicken and Stuffing - Salad

Tuesday
Enchiladas (freezer) - Salad

Wednesday
4WD Club Meeting - eat at meeting
Grom has cKc - PB&J

Thursday
Ham and Cheese Strata (freezer) - Salad

Friday
Fish and a Movie Night

Saturday
Date Night with Surferman (Eat out!)

Sunday
Lunch = Leadership Meeting at church - Making 3 kinds of Chili - Cornbread - Salad
Dinner with my folks

My Commitment to Loveliness wasn't much of a commitment last week.

As soon as I'm done here, I'm going to go do something off this list. Must... stop... the... procrastination.

101 Things to Do
Still working on #3 - Memorize Psalm 8.
Oh Lord, our Lord. How excellent is your name in all the earth...

I hope to have more next week.

Have a great week!

GeMoOrgNo

GeMoOrgNo - Get More Organized Now is the brilliant idea of Lara Gallagher, The Lazy Organizer. Along the lines of ...
  • NaNoWriMo - National Novel Writing Month
  • NaBloPoMo - National Blog Posting Month
  • NoBloShoMo - November Blog Shoe Month (Can you believe that! People are going to post pictures of the shoes they wear every day)
The challenge of GeMoOrgNo is to post a photo of something organized everyday.

#31 on my list of 101 Things to Do is was NaNoWriMo. Who am I kidding? I don't have time to write a novel. But GeMoOrgNo... now that's something I can do.

I'm in.

How did I miss Monday?

I've been floundering for the past few days without a plan. Here's what we've eaten the past few days and what the rest of the week looks like.

Monday - Ham and Cheese Risotto - Spinach Salad (with cranberries, feta cheese and pecans)

Tuesday - Easy Ravioli Bake - Broccoli - Green Salad

Wednesday - BBQ Chicken Chili - Cornbread

Thursday - Crockpot Chicken with Stuffing - Green Beans

Friday - Fish and a Movie Night

Saturday - Surferman's Pizza Night

My Commitment to Loveliness wasn't much of a commitment last week.

And then there's my 101 list... I've noticed a few others making their lists - Javamama and Sarah. Do you have a list too? I'm down to 814 days. I should get to checking some things off.

Here's one I'll work on this week - 3. Memorize Psalm 8

Any interest in posting weekly about our adventures with our lists? We can root each other on.

Done #81 - Go to a Blues game

It's a Beautiful Day for a Ballgame, for a ballgame, today.
The fans are out to get a ticket or two
From Walla Walla, Washington to Kalamazoo

It's a beautiful day for a home run
But even a triple's okay
We're gonna cheer and boo
And raise a hallabaloo
At the ballgame, today!
I grew up in Southern California. My dad had a share of season tickets and the best seats to see the Dodgers play. I have great memories of Steve Yeager (he was my favorite), Steve Garvey, Rick Russel, Davey Lopes and Roy Cey. I can't believe I remember the Dodger's infield lineup from back in the day. It was always great fun to go catch a game and eat a Dodger Dog.

We have a local team. I've always wondered what their games were like. So much that I put going to a game on my list of things to do. It happened when we were offered FREE tickets.

The team plays in a league that seems to be for players that are between community college and university teams. A lot of the players will be playing at our local university next season. We didn't recognize any names.

We got to the game at the end of the first game of a double header. There was quite a crowd - lots of families. There were seats, but also a grassy hill (note to self - next time bring a blanket) that was perfect for rolling down. The teams played well and work hard. Between games - while the local gymnastics school performed - the players groomed the field. The food was expensive, but Grom got a hot dog. It got cold when the sun went down. We didn't get to see much of the game - it started late and we were ill prepared for the cold.

We'll be back. I might even ask for season tickets.

Done #94 - Sunset Picnic on the beach

I forgot to put the chicken in the crockpot today. I didn't realize it until 3 p.m. It was way to late to do anything. It was time to punt.

I wanted to go to Farmer's Market for BBQ, but that didn't fit our budget. And then I remembered...

Surferman bravely gave blood recently and received a coupon for a free pizza. It was a perfect reward for meeting his fear of needles head on. We ordered the pizza. I threw together a yummy spinach salad. And we were off to Grom's favorite pirate park. (Every park is Grom's favorite - this one has a pirate ships to climb on and seals to ride.)

We enjoyed our pizza and salad on the longest day of summer. It's a beautiful day.

Done #37 - Find out the name of the Fedex Ground Guy

He came into work today - with a package of course.

I signed and he started to walk away.

I said, "Hey, what's your name? You're in here a lot and I'd like to greet you by name"

He said, "Tom"

I said, "Nice to meet you, I'm Robin"

He said, "I know, you get a lot of packages." And he walked out the door.

I wonder if he knows Rusty, the UPS guy.

Done - #14 Take a weekend camping trip.

I was inspired by the wonderful and romantic picture that Everyday Mommy posted from their camping trip.

I'm really bad about taking pictures. I let so many wonderful moments slip away.

It's not wonderful or romantic, but here's our rig.

And here's a little boy that had fun camping and getting really dirty.

I'll work on a wonderful and romantic picture next time. And this crosses #14 off my list.

It's our annual camping weekend with our friends. I have a lot to do before we leave after Surferman gets home from work tomorrow. See you Saturday.

Works For Me Wednesday - Fast Face Washing

One of the items on my list of 101 Things to Do
is to wash my face every night for 30 days. I started tackling it through Smart Habit Saturday hosted by The Lazy Organizer.

I'm a night owl and often don't have the good sense to go to bed. By the time I start heading that way, I'm exhausted. My face usually gets neglected, but not anymore. I've been working on establishing the habit of washing my face every night. It's working.

One thing I have found that helps are those premoistened facial wipes. The brand I bought from Costco is Ponds.

I wouldn't use them every night but they sure do the job when I haven't had the sense to get to bed before I was too tired to get to bed.

Works for Me!

Check out Rocks In My Dryer for more WFMW hints and tips.

DONE- #97 Send a care package to a soldier in Iraq

Dear Soldier,

Today, as I write this letter, is Memorial Day. Many Americans are celebrating the start of summer. It's a weekend of fun, food and good times. I would guess that many Americans don't think about why they get this day off of work, they don't think about the men and women who have bravely served - then and now. I hope that with this letter and box, you feel honored, appreciated, supported and loved.

I had a very good friend who lived to 104 who served in World War I. Both of my grandfathers served in World War II. A couple of uncles served in Vietnam and a cousin is home now after a tour in Iraq. He expects to return to Iraq before too long. These brave men, have taught me to honor and respect our soldiers. This gift is a token of that respect. I hope that it's encouraging to you that they each made it home safe. I pray that you make it home safe.

I am privileged to write this letter on behalf of my family. Most every Sunday, four generations of us gather for family dinner. There is my mother and father, Crazy Knitter and The Boss. My grandmother just turned 90. My sister Queen Bee and her husband Rip as well as my husband Surferman and our son Grom. I've enclosed a photo of us. (Nicknames inserted for webprivacy - these aren't our real names - real names will be used in the letter sent).

When the opportunity to pack a box to send to you was presented to me at church, I decided to take the idea to my family. There was no arm twisting, no talking into - just an enthusiastic desire to bless you. We each contributed to the things in your box. We hope you can use them, enjoy them, or trade them for something you might like more. We tried to keep things practical, but hope that you also find a little joy and happiness in this box.

My son Grom is almost 3. We had a great time going through the store choosing things for in your box. He chose the cookies and wanted to get you a bag of little firemen. While the firemen might have been fun, I wanted to use the limited space for useful stuff. He drew the picture for you. He is at a stage where he asks "Why?" constantly. He kept asking me why we were buying things for a soldier. I'm not even sure he understands or knows what a soldier is. I wish you could've heard our conversation. It went something like this...

We're packing a box of things for a soldier in Iraq.
Why?
Because we want to bless him.
Why?
Because he is far from home and we want him to know that people appreciate him.
Why?
He is doing a hard job
Why?
He is trying to make the lives of a lot of people better
Why?
That's what he does
Why?
It's the kind of person he is
Why?
That's the way God made him. Do you think he'd like a Cliff Bar?
Yes, Apricot's me favorite.
We'll send Apricot then.
Why?

We are grateful for you. Thank you for your service to our country. Thank you for the sacrifices you and your family have made in order for you to be a Marine. We know your job is hard. We can only imagine what your time in Iraq is like. Keep your head up. God bless you.

Please know that we thank God for you, that we ask Him to protect you, to comfort you, to guide you and to show you His love. While we hope that the things in this box meet some of your needs, but hope you know that Jesus is ALL that you need.

Smart Habit Saturday

I'm back for another SMART Habits Saturday with The Lazy Organizer.

It's been a great week. I'm 7 for 7 with my habit of washing my face AND as a bonus I've been taking my vitamins and supplements every night also. 23 days from crossing off one of my 101 things to do.

I'm adding drinking water this week. My goal is to drink 3 qts of water a day. One of the quarts will have electrolytes added.

Habit 2 - Drink 3 qts of water daily.
Habit 1 - Wash my face every night.

Have a smart week!

Daily Bible Reading - Luke 3-4

Luke 3-4

Prove by the way you live that you have repented of your sins and turned to God.
Luke 3:8
