Friday Fave Five

1. A different Chuck... my Chuck Taylor One Stars. I love them. They are comfortable, stylish and take me back to my youth. I wish I could remember exactly when I wore them, but I suspect it was the same period of time that I sometimes tinted my hair pink and blue. (Of course it was temporary color... I've always been a chicken). They were a steal at Target. Surferman has a pair too, so I have to make sure he's not wearing his when we go out.

2. Rain! It rained all week. Hail, lightening and thunder too! I love it. Our hills are greening up and sometimes it feels like we should start building an ark.

3. Buddy Time with Grom - Surferman started it. He lies down with Grom. They cuddle and tell stories. I wish I could say that I take my turn putting Grom to bed, but I don't. I always have something I want to do. This week, Grom picked Mommy for some Buddy Time. It was nice having that sweet time with my sweet boy. I think I'll be taking more turns.

4. Getting to wear my orange raincoat... alot! See # 2.

5. Good Earth Tea - If you've had it you'll know what I'm talking about... it's spice and sweet and warmth and comfort all wrapped into one lovely cup of tea. If you haven't had it, you should.

Friday's Fave Five is hosted by Susanne at Living to Tell the Story.

When it gets emotional...

originally posted at my Medifast blog
Week 11

Down 1.2 lbs 48.4 lbs total

It's funny how I'm very content with a just over one pound weight loss this week when I was almost suicidal with a three pound loss a couple of weeks ago.

With my huge loss last week, I didn't expect another big number. I'm fine with it. The weight will come off.

For no obvious reason, today was very emotional. All I wanted to do was eat. I wish I could say that I stayed 100%. It wasn't a full blown binge, but I was out of control to a degree.

I need to figure this out.

The emotions: boredom, stress, failure, apprehension.

boredom - there was no plan for this afternoon. I got home from church (I work at our church) and did nothing (or not much).

stress - I have a lot to do at church tomorrow, and we are going out of town tomorrow night.

failure - I didn't get a couple of things done today at church that I should've gotten to. I forgot. I hate forgetting. I hate letting people down.

apprehension - Going out of town introduces a lot of unknowns, especially when you're doing something like Medifast. Where we live is not too crowded, it's beautiful and life seems to move a little slower. Surferman jokes about living in a bubble. It's always hard to leave the bubble.

As I write it all down, it becomes clear... NO PLAN = NO SUCCESS!

I need to keep my to do lists and my calendars near. I need to work my to do lists. I'm too busy to be bored. I need to use my lists to plan for our time out of town... if it's written down, I can't forget something. I will be prepared.

Tomorrow will be a different day. There will be a plan.

Random Dozen - 1/20/10

1. So I was thinking about how Jon Bon Jovi never seems to age much. His hair is smaller nowadays, but he still manages to look like a boy somehow. And then that made me think of the story of Dorian Gray. Question: If you physically lock in one age for yourself, which would you choose and why?
Well... I guess I need to read Dorian Gray. Physically? I'm not sure there is an age that I'd lock in. Maybe when I was 13 turning 14. My hair had great wings. I was still naturally blonde. I had cute clothes. I was preppy. My socks always matched my shirt.

2. What is the best dish that you cook or bake (your piece de resistance?)
Robin's Top Secret World's Best Brownies

3. When you feel blue, what is one strategy you use to help yourself back to normal?
Count my blessings and don't dwell on the negative.

4. When was the last time you danced in public?
I danced (Wii Just Dance) with some friends at a friend's house. Not really public, but I'm like WAY older than any of those girls and should deserve some props.

5. Do you consider yourself a realist or dreamer?
I'm a realist.

6. As a parent, what is one thing that you have done well?
Instilled a love of books and "real" things. Grom would rather watch a show like "How It's Made" than a cartoon.

7. Which is your favorite character on the Andy Griffith show?
Aunt Bea, I guess. Can't say I'm a huge Andy Griffith fan.

8. On a scale of 1-10, how much do you know about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.?
2. On Monday I was talking to someone about Martin Luther King, we kinda challenged each other to find his "I have a dream" speech online and watch the whole thing. I haven't done it... yet. Maybe I'll add it to my new 101 things to do list.

9. Have you never been mellow? Have you never tried … to find a comfort from in side you? (Sorry, Jorge was singing that song just now, and it just seemed to be perfect timing as I was creating this week’s questions.) REAL question: What is your #1 driving pet peeve?
People who take pictures while they are driving. Seriously, it would be people who pull onto the highway and can't get up to speed before I almost plow into them.

10. Which color best represents your mood today? Care to elaborate?
Beige with a splash of red. It was a stormy day that was a little busy. Nothing excited happened but there was some urgency to get some things done.

11. If your spouse were an animal, which would he/she be?
Probably a big golden lab. Loyal and loves the water.

12. What activity takes up the bulk of your time on an average day?
Sleeping. That probably doesn't count though... I'd have to say I spend the bulk of my time each day on my computer.

FOR TODAY... Monday January 18, 2010

Outside my window... right now it's dry, but we are expecting rain the rest of the week.

I am thinking... about rain. We had rain this morning and early afternoon, but since then it's kinda petered out. The forecast shows rain for the rest of the week. Bring it on!

I am hearing... laugh track on the TV

I am thankful for... a roof over my head and a home that isn't leaking or collapsing or destroyed and for family close by during the storms.

I am wearing... a grey "track suit" with light turquoise blue tee and trainers. I'm very comfy.

I am remembering... that I get a night away with Surferman tomorrow night. Yippee!

I am going... to celebrate Christmas with my Uncles and Aunts and Cousins this weekend. It's always fun when we are able to get together. We'll have our annual gift exchange. I have one gift already. I need another. Any ideas? $50 range.

I am reading... the same books from last week - The Christmas Quilt and Sheet Music.

I am hoping... that tomorrow evening is unifying, relaxing and fun. We are hoping to finally finish our Family Mission Statement. I hope Grom is good for his grandparents.

On my mind... Haiti.

From the learning rooms... Cookies still. It's "p" week at school.

Noticing that... my fingernails are as long as I can remember them ever being. I need a manicure. I have to find a new nail salon. I had been going to the same place since before Grom was born, but they don't seem to care about my business so I'm moving on.

Pondering these words... actually this word... rest.

From the kitchen... Grom wants cherry cupcakes to take to school to celebrate his 5 1/2 birthday on Friday. The things a Mommy will do for her boy with a summer birthday. I bought vanilla cake mix from Trader Joe's and plan to stir in some dried cherries and then dust with powdered sugar. See any reason why that wouldn't work?

Around the house... I'm trying to develop the habit of putting my things away (in the same place) when I first get home. The problem is that I usually am rushing to a bathroom, so I throw my purse and backpack down wherever on the way.

One of my favorite things... the smell of a freshly washed fluffy towel.

A picture to share...

Friday Fave Five

If you've read my blog for any length of time, you know I like to join bloggers who provide blog prompts. I found a new one that I'm going to give a go. Friday's Fave Five is hosted by Susanne at Living to Tell the Story.

Here is how Susanne describes it...
It's a place to come on Friday's and think back over your week and just post about 5 favorite things from your week. It can be anything that tickled your fancy over the week. Favorite quotes, posts, happenings, scriptures, recipes, pictures, great internet finds, etc., etc.
1. Chuck was back this week. Sunday was the 2 hour premiere and Monday brought another hour. Zac Levi is hilarious (he rocked Alvin and the Chipmunks) and the rest of the cast is great. Adam Baldwin is perfect in his role of Casey. The romance between Chuck and Sarah continues to be complicated. New adventures are in store as the Nerd Herd Best Buy Buy More employee sets out to save the world and get the girl. Chuck has some mad skills this season. You can watch full episodes at Hulu.

2. Cauliflower is really yummy. I've been eating a lot of it this week. Can't seem to get enough. Cauliflower, a highly nutritious vegetable, contains many nutrients that can help prevent a range of diseases from cancer to cataracts.

Guess what I'm having for dinner tonight?

3. The start of Marvelous Mondays. We used to have Fabulous Fun Friday. We had to take a hiatus as Grom started kindergarten and schedules changed. Well the buddies are back in the same gymnastics class and Fabulous Fun Friday has morphed into Marvelous Mondays. (Grom still calls it Fabulous Fun Monday. Somebody needs to teach that kid about alliteration). We've cut out the Panda Express (and lunch) which is ok. I don't think I can stay on plan with Medifast at Panda Express. We still shop, hit Starbucks and solve the world's problems. Spending time with my friend Stacey is always one of my favorite things to do.

4. The McCulloughs. My parents have lots of friends. Some of my favorites are Bill and Shirley. They are in town and visiting. It's nice to have them around. They brought Grom night vision goggles for Christmas. How cool is that?

They travel in a big old Safari motor home hence the photo.

5. If you need a good laugh, come on over when I've got The Biggest Loser Wii game going. I crack up my 18 month old niece Maggie. Her laugh is adorable. I exercise with Bob. I am amazed by how close and yet far away they got at making the computer Bob look like the real Bob. I'm distracted as I huff and puff by the careful placement of tattoos. It's not easy. I feel like an oaf. But it's an exercising oaf and I'm proud of that.

What have been your favorite things this week?

Thursdays

originally posted at my Medifast blog

Week 10

Just because I'm really good at math (and the x10s are really easy) I figured out that this is day 70 for me. I stopped counting the days a while ago. I realized a few weeks ago that it was time to settle in for the long haul.

Even though I've lost 47 pounds, I still have over 200 pounds to go. It could be daunting. I could give up. But I won't. I'm not sure why I'm so confidant, but I am. This is my season to lose weight and get healthy. I'm going to do this.

Anyways, I love Thursdays. The week is drawing to an end and the weekend is on it's way. I also get to do my official weight for the week.

I always wear the same pajamas to bed on Wednesday night. I wake up and head to the bathroom. After I pee, I step on the scale and wait.

I blogged earlier about my crazy Biggest Loser scale that takes forever to settle on the true weight. It used to drive me crazy. Now I know that if I stand super still, count to 7 and look down (which isn't super easy - I have a lot of me to look around) that the weight should be locked in or locking in soon.

I intently remember the number - chanting it in my head all the way to my studio and my computer. I can't seem to remember what my weight was last week. I have an idea of what it was, but don't know how much I actually lost until I enter it at the Medifast website.

Today it was 6 pounds! Total 47.2 pounds.

And then my day starts. Today it started VERY happy.

Random Dozen - 1/13/10

Anybody remember when I was doing Thursday Thunks?

I stopped because the questions were often inappropriate (I deleted them when I answered). I didn't feel like I had any chance to change that or bring Jesus to that meme. While I don't miss questions about things that should be private, I do miss some of the fun random questions.

Lookie what I stumbled upon today! Linda, more affectionately known as Lidna, has thought of another dozen to ask. If you'd like to join in please visit 2nd Cup of Coffee .

1. When was the last time you craved a food--what was it, and did you cave?
Right before Christmas, we went to pizza with Surferman's family. They bought a "family special". There were these rolls.... big puffy, white bread rolls... warm from the oven... and butter. They looked really good and smelled fantastic. I did NOT cave. I am very determined about staying on plan and cravings haven't been a problem... all glory to God.

2. M & M's or Skittles?
M&M's (peanut butter M&M's if I get a choice).

3. Have you ever read the Bible completely through?
If I have, it wasn't done purposefully. I'm trying again this year.

4. How long does it take you to really wake up in the morning?
I wake up pretty quick once I'm out of bed. I can get out of the house in no time flat. It's quite remarkable. But, back to the getting out of bed part... that takes a long time. I love to snooze.

5. Have you ever been on a cruise? If not, would you like to?
Surferman and I went on a cruise as part of our trip to Israel back in 1999 (yikes that was a long time ago). We went to Patmos, Mykonos and Ephesus. I have looked into cruises lately. They are pretty affordable.

6. Who is your favorite actress?
I don't think I have a "favorite". Lately I like Amy Adams. There always seems to be a character issue that comes up that changes my opinion.

7. ______ is something that I will just never understand.
Sweat pants with words on the booty.
and
Scarves worn with tank tops.

8. How much of a technology junkie are you?
On a scale of 1-10, I'd say I'm a solid 8, maybe a slight 9.

9. Do you enjoy selecting greeting cards for people, or is it more of a cultural "have to" for you?
I'm not good at sending greeting cards. I buy them in bulk for church and usually have Grom make them when I need one personally. Who can resist a hand drawn card from a 5 year old?

10. When was the last time you got a new style/haircut?
I cut about 6 inches off my hair a couple of months ago, but it didn't really change the style. I'm on the cusp of something radical. Maybe I'll make it a reward for meeting a weight loss goal. I'm thinking about lightening my hair to be the same color as Grom's. And then maybe some layers.
Thoughts?

11. What do you enjoy shopping for most?
Groceries. For the most part I love shopping for food. The thrill of the hunt... the search for a bargain.. all those cheeses...

12. What's the last thing you think of before you leave the house?
Am I forgetting anything? Where did I leave that cup of coffee? Do I have my phone? Where are my keys? All of these fly through my head simultaneously.

FOR TODAY... Monday January 11, 2010

Outside my window... it's dark now, but we've been having some amazing sunsets. Tonight it was silver, baby blue and baby pink.

I am thinking... that I should clear off my table instead of going to bed early. Who am I kidding? I won't go to bed early and I probably won't clear off my table either.

I am hearing... random noise.

I am thankful for... the start of Marvelous Mondays. My Fabulous Fun Friday Friend and I have figured out how to get our boys into the same gymnastics class again. I'm so glad to have time with Stacey again.

I am wearing... jeans, red long sleeved t-shirt, black chucks and earrings I made.

I am remembering... that I haven't looked at my to do list at all today. yikes! I was too busy.

I am going... to have to plan time to exercise with the Wii. Left to my own, I'm "too busy" to get to it.

I am reading... The Christmas Quilt by Jennifer Chiaverni and another book by Kevin Leman. I'm also listening to Dark Tort by Diane Mott Davidson when I'm alone in my car.

I am hoping... for a great getaway. Surferman and I are taking a night away from home next week. We hope to finish our family mission statement and just enjoy each other.

On my mind... vacations. We are planning some trips for the summer - both family reunions, and maybe a couple of weekends away this winter / early spring. So far a long weekend in San Francisco is for sure.

From the learning rooms... It's "O" week... and we have some great books about cookies from the library.

Noticing that... sharing toothpaste with a 5 year old should be avoided. yuck.

Pondering these words...
"No one is holy like the LORD, For there is none besides You, Nor is there any rock like our God." - 1 Samuel 2:2 (NKJV)
From the kitchen... Grom and I made breakfast cookies yesterday. They are healthy enough and he eats them.

Around the house... new sliding glass doors. Our old doors were impossible to open and they didn't lock. The new ones are beautiful and slide like butter on a hot pancake.

One of my favorite things... writing with Sharpie markers. Love those bold strokes. The only bummer is the way they bleed through paper.

A picture to share... I think it's Grom. We had a little more fun than we should have at Walmart last Saturday. He had to have those shades. He spent his own money.

Usually a mother's worst nightmare... I lost my child.

originally posted at my Medifast blog

Rest assured, I know exactly where my boy is. He's in bed fast asleep.

However, I have lost as much weight as he weighs. It's a happy accomplishment.

3 pounds this week. Total 41.6 pounds.

I also hit my first 10% goal and was able to add a bead to my bracelet for 40 pounds. It's a week of celebration. I'm not sure how I'm going to celebrate my 10% goal yet. I welcome ideas.

I'm finding that there are foods that I just can't handle eating. They might be on plan, but if they are in my house... watch out! Identifying them is half the battle. I love coffee. I only drink decaf, so it's not the buzz I enjoy. I love the flavor. Hot coffee with a bit of milk or creamer. During the first weeks on Medifast, I guess I missed where I could have half and half. I drank my coffee with hot chocolate or cappuccino. My coffee consumption went down, but everything was fine. Fast forward to last week when I had a pint of half and half in my fridge. The coffee flowed free. I'm not buying it anymore. But coffee at Starbucks has become a super treat.

My discovery of the week: I make the chocolate pudding in my MB blender with extra crushed ice and extra cold water. When it's blended it's like soft serve ice cream.

Daybook January 4, 2010

FOR TODAY... Monday January 4, 2010

Outside my window... it's dark now, but it was a beautiful day.

I am thinking... about a woman I know who is hurting in her marriage. I sent her an email yesterday. I didn't hear back. I pray, but she needs something else too. How do I connect?

I am hearing... my bead charm bracelet making noise against the deck of my computer. I don't like the noise, but I like wearing the bracelet.

I am thankful for... my new kid. His behavior is really coming along. I like it.

I am wearing... navy pants, pink tee shirt, trainers

I am remembering... how good it feels to cross things off my to do list.

I am going... to give myself a manicure tomorrow. My polish is peeling off. yuck.

I am reading... "Have a New Kid by Friday" by Kevin Leman. So much common sense that wasn't so common in our home. I also started a new daily Bible Reading Plan. I'm 5 days in.

I am hoping... to make some plans for the weekend and not just let the weekend happen and pass by.

On my mind... hospitality, travel and cheese.

From the learning rooms... books about cake. School restarted today.

Noticing that... my feet seem to have lost weight. Some of my shoes fit looser. I wish more of my jeans fit looser.

Pondering these words... "We need to make a rule..." Why do we think that stated words will change someones behavior?

From the kitchen... I've been playing "Useitup". I got 23.5 points today. We had leftovers enchiladas from the freezer, leftover chili from the freezer and last nights dinner and talked someone into finishing off a bottle of salad dressing. (If you're wondering, I make up the points for fun. The only prize at the end of "Useitup" is a nice empty freezerpantryfridge.

Around the house... this little piggy goes Wii, Wii, Wii, Wii all the way home. We moved the Wii to our TV room and have been having fun playing it. We only have one controller (it's kinda a drag). Anyone know if the aftermarket controllers are any good or do I need to save my pennies for a Nintendo. I really hoping to use it to move my body more and get some exercise. I ordered the Biggest Loser game tonight. I think I might have just referred to myself as a little pig... snort.

One of my favorite things... having Grom at church with me (for short periods of time) when I'm working.

A picture to share...Grom was almost 2. He's on Surferman's back and we're were walking around Yellowstone Park.

Grom's Bookbag - Cake

I probably shouldn't ask Grom what he'd like to read about when we are watching TV. We were in the middle of episode of Ace of Cakes. Guess what he chose? If you guessed CAKE you are right.

I found some great books. It was a lot of fun.

Here are some more books that aren't currently available to the carousel widget.
A Cake All for Me! by Karen Magnuson Bell (this was Grom's favorite book for December and the one he chose to draw about for his lap reading homework for school).
Don't Forget by Pat Lakin
The Woman who Flummoxed the Fairies: an old tale from Scotland by Heather Forest

The only thing we have left to do... bake a cake. Maybe Wednesday?
